  • The week of events to promote Chile will take place between November 1 and 6 and will include activities in Beijing and Shanghai. The delegation will be led by the Minister of Foreign Relations and will include the director of InvestChile and other authorities.

On Monday, the Minister of Foreign Relations, Roberto Ampuero, the director general of DIRECON, Rodrigo Yáñez, and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Chile, Xu Bu, launched Chile Week China 2018, an event that seeks to deepen commercial relations and promote Chile in China as a reliable supplier of goods and services and an attractive destination for investment.

For the first time, the delegation will be led by the Foreign Minister, Roberto Ampuero. “We have a week full of activities, reflecting the excellent level of relations between our two countries. The bilateral agenda is very busy and very stimulating and points to the future,” he said.

He also stressed that Chile and China aim to continue deepening their bilateral relations. “Both parties are interested in this and we also want to modernize our free trade agreement, adapting it to the incorporation of technologies and innovation, beyond the traditional products we have been exporting, wine, fruit, minerals and, of course, seafood.”

Chile Week China 2018 will take place between November 1 and 6 in the cities of Beijing and Shanghai, with bilateral and commercial meetings, economic and technical seminars, activities with local investors, promotion of tourism and exports, activities targeting end customers and Chile’s participation in the China International Import Expo fair.

The public-private delegation will also include former President and Special Ambassador for Asia-Pacific, Eduardo Frei; Minister of Agriculture Antonio Walker; Minister of Public Works Juan Andrés Fontaine; Undersecretary of Tourism Mónica Zalaquett; the director general of DIRECON, Rodrigo Yáñez; the director of ProChile, Jorge O’Ryan; the director of InvestChile, Cristián Rodríguez; the Governor of the O’Higgins Region, Juan Manuel Masferrer; and members of Chile’s Manufacturers’ Association (SOFOFA) and the Chile-China Business Council, led by Francisco Silva.

This fourth version of Chile Week China takes place in the context of the celebration of 48 years of uninterrupted diplomatic relations between the two countries and 12 years of operation of the Free Trade Agreement, which is currently in the process of modernization.

Although China is Chile’s largest trading partner, with annual bilateral trade reaching US$34,596 million, Chinese investment in Chile has been slower to arrive and the stock of foreign direct investment from China (including Hong Kong) reached only US$922 million in 2016, representing 4.3% of the inflow from Asia.

This year, InvestChile is organizing three sector-specific workshops in Beijing, focusing on the Food Industry, Public Works and Venture Capital. In addition, it is preparing a series of activities in Shanghai in the framework of the China International Import Expo fair.
